The Government of Alberta announced additional grants for small businesses affected by provincial public health orders last week.
Small businesses in Alberta affected by COVID-19 restrictions can qualify for an additional payment of up to $10,000 from the Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant. Businesses who qualified for previous grant payments can also apply for this additional funding, receiving up to $30,000 in total support.
“It’s really nice to see more support for the small and local businesses. Every little penny will help them get through this time,” commented Tanner Routh, economic development officer for the Town of Devon. “[The town] is also working with our businesses to be as flexible as we can.”
The Town of Devon has allowed its local eateries to open outdoor patios, and Routh said administration has already received several applications from local businesses to open patios this summer to bring in a bit of foot traffic.
“We have to be there to help small businesses in Alberta get to the other side of this pandemic. With the expansion of the relaunch grant, we are helping small businesses make it through the third wave of COVID-19. We know the past year has not been easy and are grateful for what all small businesses in Alberta have done to help protect the lives of Albertans in their communities,” said Albertan Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation Doug Schweitzer in a press release.
The grant offers financial assistance to Alberta businesses, cooperatives and non-profit organizations with fewer than 500 employees that have experienced closures or losses of 30 per cent or more due to COVID-related public health orders. The Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant has also been expanded to include hotels, taxis and ride-sharing businesses.
Applications for the grant funding will be open until May 31, 2021. Additional supports for businesses are also available through the federal government.
